Today was supposed to be my day to hike Mount Marcy in New York, but due to “toe-gate 2016” that became impossible.
I put on my boots to see how I would feel with a smashed toe, but not good enough to have a lot of confidence in a 17-18 mile hike.
On top of that it was raining. Weather forecasts said winds at the summit were in the range of 40-50 mph. Snow was even possible. Apparently this is business as usual in the Ariondacks.
I’ll have to make a return in the future. Until then, Marcy will be the one peak in New England that continues to taunt me.
Mount Marcy 2, Chambers 0.
Two because I came to climb this past winter, but had to cancel due to concerns over long distance in snow with a small amount of daylight.

Instead I spent some time in Lake Placid, NY, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. The weather wasn’t great but the town is beautiful. I stopped by the ski jumps and the Ariondack Loj, which is where the Marcy Trail starts. If I had water and gloves with me, I probably would have hiked even though it was already 1pm. Since I didn’t, I reluctantly returned to Burlington with plans to come bak to Lake Placid sometime in the near future. I’ll add mountain biking and canoeing to my trip to use the rest of the weekend, and I think I will camp too.

On the way out, I stopped and took this picture. When I got out of the car, the wind was blowing so hard it was difficult to shut the door back. I guess its good I wasn’t on top of a mountain several thousand feet higher!

In Burlington, I stopped by my favorite pizza spot called American Flatbread and got a pizza and a nice IPA. I also stopped by a local distillery for a taste testing before heading back to the hotel to catch up on some blogging. BBQ for dinner and here I am. My trip is coming to an end. I covered over 1,000 miles in the car and completed two state high points taking my total to 22.
I look forward to returning to New England for my next adventure.. maybe later this year.
