Peak #6 – Clingman’s Dome, TN

The Smoky Mountains.

Clingman’s Dome.

6,644 above sea level.

The highest point on the Appalachian Trail.

The best views of any high point to-date.

I went last weekend and made the 15 mile round trip. The road to the top of Clingman’s closes on December 1, meaning I had the entire Appalachian Trail, summit, parking lot, and road (for my return) to myself.

  1. We’re going to be in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area in April. I was looking for stuff to do/see in the area. I thought to myself, “who do I know that’s been to Clingman’s Dome?” Considering it’s a “peak”, I figured you had been there on your quest. Is it worth an hour drive from where we’ll be to see it? The road should be open again in April. So we should just have the half-mile hike at the end.

Bonus question: Since you had the place all to yourself, did you urinate from the top of the observation tower? You know what… nevermind… forget I asked that πŸ™‚

    1. Ha! Good question. The answer is no. But that’s a good idea for next time…

Definitely get up to Clingmans if you can. The drive there is beautiful and there are plenty of places you can stop along the way to enjoy the views or take pictures. The views at the top are great as well.
